{31 Days of Playlists} Day 7…So You Think You Can Dance

You knew it was coming, right?? I mean, what’s a better source for music playlists than my favorite T.V. really dance show??

I am in the midst of full-tilt rehearsals for an upcoming production of the operetta “Pirates of Penzance”.  Combined with a full college courseload, it has been an absolutely NUTTY schedule, but singing and acting being one of my passions and loves, I of course wouldn’t have it any other way.  Crafting a role, learning the musical score, production numbers has reminded me of the glorious creative process of performance art is like no other.  I think this is partly why “So You Think You Can Dance” is one of my favorite shows!  The artistry of crafting a beautiful piece of dance, and story to music is the heart of this show, and the talent level of the dancers and choreographers is simply off the charts!   I chose many of these numbers, not just for the music, but for the incredibly creativity and artistry of the dance and storytelling in each piece.    Many of these songs move me out of my acoustic/folk/indie happy place (which of course, is a good thing–as music should stretch and grow us, right?), and they have made my music library so much the richer for it!  I am always in awe of the playlist-making-gifting of dance teachers and choreographers!  (I keep itching to get my hands on my current dance teacher’s ipod – the diversity and fabulousness of her playlists is insane!  If she ever lets me check it out for longer than 30 seconds, you can bet it’ll be another playlist day!)

But I digress…

I have been a faithful SYTYCD viewer since day One.  The dancers, the inventive choreography, Nigel Lythgoe’s British toothy grin, and heck, even Mary Murphy’s bloody-and-slightly-annoying-hot-tamale-train scream have held me captive for 9 full seasons.  I’ve included my favorites clips below, along with the music available on Grooveshark.
