This Year – Goals for 2014

I read a post by Emily at Jones Design that inspired me to chime in and take stock of my 2014 goals.  As a rule, I don’t make specific goal lists at the beginning of the year–being the overachieving procrastinator that I am–because I inevitably let those dreams and aspirations fall by the wayside as soon as the rush of the new year fades.

I liked the way Emily shared these goals, because they are simple.  Some are small and some are not, but listing them in this way feels ‘doable’ to me.  After I completed this list, I started a more thorough list of goals and aspirations in my journal.    Emily invited us to play along at her blog, and share our answers–here are mine:

A bad habit I’m going to break:

Eating too much sugar.  I am embarrassed at how big of a sweet tooth I have, and despite my abstainings, my food craving and temptations always come back to sugar land.   As I’m currently doing a Paleo Whole30, I hope to be taking the first steps to really nipping this vice in the bud.

A new skill I’d like to learn:

Becoming a better writer.  I’d also like to be more organized.

A person I hope to be more like:

Besides the obvious answer of Jesus, I’m not exactly sure that I want to be more like anyone else.  I’m working on being the best version of my unique self.

A good deed I’m going to do:

I’m definitely going to do more volunteer work.  I also would love to take a mission trip with my husband.

A place I’d like to visit:

Man, where wouldn’t I like to visit??  I’ve finally come to terms with the fact that I have wanderlust in my blood, and if I could be a professional travel writer, I would be happy as a clam.  I’m excited to take a quick {afore unexpected} trip to Montreal this month, and hope to visit Oregon with my husband’s family sometime this year, if our budget allows.   I’d also like to attend a writing retreat or conference that I haven’t been to before – any ideas??

A book I’d like to read:

Again with the singular words here–for me, it should be books.  I made quite a list of new releases I’m excited about on my 2013 Booklist Linkup.  I also want to read Rachel Held Evan’s as yet untitled book coming out this fall.  I’d like to try and not just read non-fiction memoir, which seems to be my genre of choice.  Perhaps I’ll try to add some more fiction to the reading stack.  Per the recommendations of my friend Michelle, I’m pretty excited for my copy of this book on writing to come from the Amazon-Fairy.

A letter I’d like to write:

I’d like to write to my long-lost friends that I haven’t talked with in years.  I also want to write a letter to my Uncle.

A new food I’d like to try:

Hmmm. I tried brussel sprouts for the first time in 2013, and they were pretty fantastic.   I’m definitely going to try Poutine in Canada.  I also just tasted my first persimmon today, and it was delicious!

I’m going to do better at:

I’m going do my best to be more proactive, instead of reactive.

What are some of your goals for 2014?
