{31 Days of Playlists} Day 5…Then Comes Marriage (A Wedding Playlist)

About a year and a half ago, I married the Love of My Life.  Before I met him, I was beginning to think that I would be an old spinster, and after years of struggle and unsuccessful relationships, I was finally at peace with my single state.  Of course, that was just the moment that God brought the delicious miracle of  My Sweet Man into my life.

Last weekend my beautiful sister got married on a picturesque farm in Arizona.  I sang songs with members of my Dad’s former band and cried happy tears.  She was a vision, and the ceremony was beautiful.

For both my sister’s wedding, and of course my own, one of my favorite things to do was find great music (I made my sis a CD of songs I thought she and her hubs would enjoy), and for our wedding, I put together a rather extensive list of music for our DJ to play at our wedding.  We hired a string quartet for our ceremony that ended up being a rather disasterous-at-the-time-now-pretty-hilarious story, but thankfully they weren’t responsible for the music during the service.  My Godmother is one of the most incredible pianists I know, and she blessed us with her arrangement of “Be Thou My Vision” that was simply breathtaking!

There is sooo much music in the world that is beautiful for a wedding service and for celebrating with frivolity and dancing afterward, that a completely comprehensive playlist for all of that would no doubt be miles long.  Hence, I’ve scaled down to about 30 of my favorites.  Of course there were some holes in the Grooveshark database again, but I’ve included a few youtube clips below the playlist for more inspiration.  Many of the playlist songs were played at our wedding reception (When you get married at my age, “At Last” is without a doubt the perfect first dance tune), and a few were sung at my sister’s wedding. (“Marry Me”, “Longer”).    One of my favorite moments at our reception was having all of the married couples dance to Adam Sandler’s “Grow Old With You”.   The DJ had couples sit down as they called out the (consecutively higher) number of years married.  The couple standing at the end with the most years married  then gave us marriage advice.  (My Sweet Man’s Aunt and Uncle won by being married over 50 years, but I was in awe of the number of couples standing who had been married a good many years as well!  Growing up a child of divorced parents, I unfortunately did not have that example in my parents.  It was such a picture of God’s redemption and provision to have so many loving couples celebrating our marriage with such beautiful legacies! And God rest both of my parents souls, I am so grateful they each found happiness in remarriage.)

Everytime I hear music from our wedding day, I remember cherished memories of one of the best days of my entire life.  I hope you enjoy these songs, and perhaps discover new music you can share with your Love!

(A friendly reminder that if you don’t see the Grooveshark music player in this post, either switch to a laptop/desktop feed, or see the list of songs below.)

  1. These are fantastic, Sarah…awesome idea! I was just perusing through the last few days’ playlists…and I’m stoked about the rest of them! About to go subscribe… Also love your book choices and will have to add some of them to my wishlist…you clearly have great taste!

At our wedding, music was a big deal…I’m the daughter of and wife to musicians! One of the songs was a piece my dad wrote and a dear friend sang during part of the ceremony that was based on 1 John 4 – our scripture for the ceremony…really special. 🙂

  2. It’s been taking me a while to go through your lists, but I’m enjoying it very much.

We’re planning on playing a very dear to me song as the opening song for our wedding – “Love Will Come Through” by Travis. I’m not a wedding person so this is the only thing I really care about in the whole wedding “process” (so nope, not fussing too much about the dress or flowers or anything else, just play my song).

    1. Glad you’re enjoying the lists! I love the song “love will come through” as well – congrats on your upcoming nuptials!

  3. Hi Sarah! Found you on the Community Link-In on Marigold Road…great blog! Our daughter got married this summer and your playlist brings back soooo many memories. Thanks for sharing…following you now.
